Abstract

Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to understand the motherhood experience of North Korean Women Defectors delivering in South Korea.
Methods: The raw data was gathered through in-depth interviews with seven North Korean Women Defectors from July 2010 to June 2012. All of the data was analyzed through the method proposed by Colaizzi (1978).
Results: This study extracted 25 formulated meanings arranged in six themes. The six themes were ¡¯Taste a new world from the new experience of being pregnant¡¯, ¡®A painful body and mind with no relying on¡¯, ¡®The child becomes the source of vitality¡¯, ¡®Burden of a mother¡¯s role different from that of North Korea¡¯, ¡®Concern that mother¡¯s status as a North Korean woman defector may harm one¡¯s child¡¯, ¡®Put all effort into making a life for the sake of the child¡¯.
Conclusion: This findings might provide insight for future maternity related policies and nursing strategies targeting North Korean Women defectors.
